Golden Globes 2020: Billie Lourd, Sophie Skelton, Chyler Leigh, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Aisha Hinds top Supporting Actress wishlist
For the sake of the month of November, though, what we’re doing is our part to help prepare you! Throughout the Golden Globes Preview Series, we will be coming to you each day with a different category to spotlight. We’ll talk through why certain shows and performers are worthy of nominations, and then at the end share a poll for you to vote for your own favorite! Today, the focus is on Supporting Actress, a category with what feels like a billion different contenders. For some reason, the Globes have never separated comedy, drama, and limited series/movie supporting actors into separate categories, lumping them into the same group together. We hope it changes someday, but it hasn’t yet!
Voting Rules – Vote however often you’d like! We’ll share the results come Wednesday, December 4 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific time. Note that our poll is strictly for fun and to build up buzz during awards season; these polls are not for the actual Golden Globes.
Alycia Debnam-Carey, Fear the Walking Dead – There’s no indication as of yet as to if Alycia will be supporting as a lead or supporting this year — we’re including here, as this is where she’s been submitted in the past, but to us at this point, she is clearly one of the driving forces that make Fear the Walking Dead go. Alicia Clark is the only main character left from the original pilot, and we’ve seen her growth from someone unequipped to handle this apocalypse to one of the show’s most determined and yet heartfelt characters. Over the summer, she was able to present a layer of introspection and heart we’ve rarely seen on this franchise.
Aisha Hinds, 9-1-1 – We don’t think anyone has to look further than the November 11 episode of 9-1-1 to understand the placement of Hinds on this list. She makes you feel everything as Hen, a fighter and first responder who cares so much she might burst. It’s that drive, though, that can also cause her pain, as do all of the obstacles that she’s been forced to overcome. She’s a character who can make you smile with just a single word, but then bring you to tears in an equal amount of time. Hinds is a reminder not to overlook network TV, where so many wonderful performances never get the love they deserve.
Chyler Leigh, Supergirl – Speaking of heart, there are few characters on TV who present more of it than Chyler does as Alex Danvers. This is a role with almost a number of smaller roles buried underneath — sister, friend, leader, and significant other. She blends them all together into an incredibly strong woman who is unrelenting in her approach to protecting National City, while also still able to express vulnerability and show that other side of herself. With everything that she’s tackled over the past year, we’ve had a chance to see an even greater amount of depth explored.
Billie Lourd, American Horror Story: 1984 – Lourd’s Montana started off this past season as a vengeful young woman determined to destroy Brooke at all costs. She went from an enthusiastic aerobics fanatic to a serial killer to eventually, someone who found redemption and a little bit of true love. This was an insanely fun role to watch, especially with all of the enthusiasm that Billie threw into it. She probably best exemplifies the eighties out of everyone in the cast, and she’s absolutely a character we will remember years down the line.
Sophie Skelton, Outlander – While the number of Outlander episodes that aired in 2019 is somewhat small, Skelton made the most of every single chance she had to shine. Think in terms of thje impeccable work she did alongside David Berry or the wonderful reunion between Bree and Roger in the season 4 finale. Her performance echoed the journey that someone who suffers a horrific trauma must go through to be able to heal. It comes in waves, and it’s an experience that few can properly understand. There were still moments of joy for her, but also devastating sadness. Skelton made every single one memorable.
To go along with these contenders, we’re also including three others considered favorites entering Globes campaign season — Meryl Streep of Big Little Lies, Melissa Fumero of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Yvonne Strahovski from The Handmaid’s Tale.
