American Horror Story: 1984 finale ratings, season 10 implications

American Horror Story: 1984

The American Horror Story: 1984 finale ratings are in over at FX, so what do they mean for the show’s long-term future?

The first thing that is obviously worth noting anytime that you are discussing cable ratings these days is this — if you have cable, there’s at least a reasonably good chance that you have a DVR. That means that there isn’t all that much of a demand to watch things live anymore, and because American Horror Story doesn’t have a galaxy-sized audience these days, there are viewers who are okay risking spoilers just so they can watch at their own pace a little bit later.

When looking just at the live ratings solely, we’d say that there is some reasonably good news. The final episode generated a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also over 1.08 million viewers. This is a nice increase from where the show was in the previous episode, at least in the latter measurement. Yet, this doesn’t set any records for this season in the slightest.

Do we think that there are fewer and fewer people watching live TV these days? Absolutely, but it’s still notable that American Horror Story: 1984 is down more than 30% in both the demo and total viewers from where it was last season in Apocalypse. Granted, that season had a lot going for it from the jump — just think in terms of the crossover component and some of the notable cast members. 1984 was the first season of the franchise without an appearance from Evan Peters or Sarah Paulson. We did think that the show did its best in order to contend with some of that; as a matter of fact, we’d argue that this was one of the strongest endings for a season in years.
