Golden Globes 2020: Why Killing Eve, Outlander, Lucifer, Power, Poldark deserve Drama Series nod
For the sake of the month of November, though, what we’re doing is our part to help prepare you! Throughout the Golden Globes Preview Series, we will be coming to you each day with a different category to spotlight. We’ll talk through why certain shows and performers are worthy of nominations, and then at the end share a poll for you to vote for your own favorite! Today, the focus is on Outstanding Drama Series, the category that will easily command the most attention leading into the actual awards.
Voting Rules – Vote however often you’d like! We’ll share the results come Wednesday, December 4 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific time. Note that our poll is strictly for fun and to build up buzz during awards season; these polls are not for the actual Golden Globes.
Killing Eve – One of television’s best shows, every episode establishes itself as a thrilling and dangerous game of TV chase with an immensely complicated relationship at its core. Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh somehow get stronger with every passing episode and, to date, the story hasn’t missed a beat. It’s got a good chance of being nominated, and it deserves that and then some.
Lucifer – Netflix managed to do so much more than just revive a fan favorite after three seasons at Fox. They also gave Lucifer more creative freedom and allowed it to embrace its inner devil more than ever. The end result was a show that when dramatic, was devastating and well-acted. Yet, it was equally successful having fun and allowing us to be immersed and that world.
Outlander – We received confirmation earlier today that Outlander is in fact eligible for the 2020 Globes, and that makes us extremely happy given the quality of the content that we saw throughout the final episodes. You had in one arguably one of the greatest Richard Rankin performances ever, and then in the finale Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and John Bell brought the extraordinary “Man of Worth” home.
Poldark – The final season of the British drama took on challenges aplenty, whether it be time jumps, new characters, and combining real-life historical figures. Yet, in the process it never quite forgot what the main focus was — the highs and lows of Ross Poldark, a likable but flawed hero trying his best for his family and Cornwall as a whole. This was a worthy conclusion to what remains a vastly underrated show.
Power – Finally, we turn to the Starz drama, which delivered arguably its biggest shocker ever in the recent midseason finale. Leading up to that moment, though, we also still saw great moments aplenty as the story of James St. Patrick became all the more complicated and there were epic betrayals and heartbreaking moments aplenty. We’re not at the end yet, but the writers are revving it up to be fantastic.
To go along with these five shows, we have three others featured within our poll below — Greenleaf, Succession, and also The Affair. They are also worthy of a lot of praise going into campaign season.
