Survivor honors Rudy Boesch with tribute after death

Rudy Boesch

Over the weekend, all Survivor fans received some very unfortunate news — season 1 castaway and legend Rudy Boesch had died at the age of 91. He lived a full live, one that included decades in the Navy serving the country. The majority of his years came well before becoming one of the biggest TV stars of his era, a show that captured generations and became such a hit that it’s still going strong today.

While Rudy has not been a part of Survivor for a long time on-screen, he’s long remained a part of the extended family. He’s been recognized by Jeff Probst and others as an iconic castaway, and we do credit him with getting older viewers interested in the series from the start. Hopefully, he helped defy some stereotypes that people often associate with reality TV.

At the end of the episode tonight, Survivor did show a tribute card featuring Rudy, while mentioning his status both within the game and outside of it. While we know that there are a lot of memorable survivor players over the years, there’s never going to be anything like the original Survivor: Borneo. Its castaways were larger than life and they paved a trail.

For CBS tonight to give Rudy a title card reemphasizes the commitment that they have to their own castaways — they recognize how they got here, and we hope viewers who haven’t seen the original season will go back to watch it.
