Are You the One? season 8: Why is there no reunion on MTV?

Are You the One

Entering tonight’s Are You the One? season 8 finale, we have questions aplenty — especially about a reunion. Why in the world are we not getting one?

The situation around the lack of a reunion show is weird. While we wouldn’t classify the new season (subtitled Come One, Come All) a ratings sensation (it’s been hard to even track the show’s numbers since MTV moved it out of primetime and onto Monday nights) it has a devoted social-media following. Not only that, but the show has received positive reviews for presenting a new side to sexual fluidity on television. Having a cast full of people completely open insofar as their presences go has led to a revolutionary experience — for some viewers, it may be offering them a chance to see themselves on TV in a way that they haven’t before. For others, it may introduce a human element to people they don’t see in real life. It may also help to stop stigmas or generalizations.

Throughout this season, we’ve become invested in these people throughout some of their highs and lows — and there have been plenty of both. Some have found their “Perfect Match,” or at least the ones presented by production. Others are still looking. While we know that there is a monetary prize to be potentially found at the end of the season, we think that there are a lot of viewers watching more out of interest in the relationships. We want to know where everyone is after the show, who they are dating, and what they want their future to hold. There’s so much interesting stuff that could be mined with this show but unfortunately, there isn’t going to be a chance to mine it … at least on the network. We feel like it’s an enormous opportunity missed, especially since this season could be so important years down the road.

For those who do want to see some of the cast back together, it does look as though there is a reunion special happening on Afterbuzz TV on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time. (See the tweet at the bottom of this article.) With that, you should get some sort of an opportunity to see where some of the people are following the show.
