‘New Girl’ season 2, episode 5 review: Why are these people friends?
Despite being what is at the end of the day a pretty silly show, “New Girl” always finds a way to somehow still ask some really existential questions about some of its characters, including why they are the way that they are, and whether or not they would have actually been friends had they come into contact with each other at a different point in their lives.
Even as they did ask all of these questions during Tuesday night’s new episode, we were reminded yet as to just how happy we were really were that these people all did manage to find each other. In a bizarre way, Nick and Schmidt already are like an old married couple in that one of them does all of these great favors for the other one (including buying them cookies and making their bed), while this “other one” does not really appreciate it at all. Meanwhile, Jess and Cece struggled over how much respect Zooey Deschanel’s character really actually had for her modeling job.
These two storylines were set up well, but what really ended up making this even better was just watching the payoff of them play out. After Cece became too hung over after her fight with Jess to be able to work, Jess had to try and model a car in high heels … and it was every bit the disaster that you would have expected. Meanwhile, Nick had himself a giant meltdown when trying to prove to himself that he could actually care for another human being that was his friend, and the end result of here was actually rather sweet.
So at the end of the day, these people really do care for each other, even if they do have a pretty weird way of showing it at times. The hilarity of watching these relationships evolve single-handedly makes this series … that and seeing Max Greenfield in a fat suit.
