Dancing with the Stars season 28 will feature ‘tweaks’ tor format
If you think back to the end of season 27, it had a controversial ending, to say the last. There were a lot of people upset about Bobby Bones winning, given that his overall dance ability was less than some of his competitors. Yet, there were also some competitors who had more dance and/or performing experience. It’s led to some debate as to whether or not this show is a dance competition or some sort of popularity contest.
We know that there are going to be changes, but there’s no real indication as to whether or not these changes will be to the rules of the show. We wouldn’t be surprised if the judges’ scores mattered for a larger percentage of the overall vote, but it’s hard to imagine the public vote ever being eradicated. That is a big part of the lifeblood of this series, and sometimes having an underdog last a long time in the competition (even if they don’t always win) can prove to be good for business a lot of the time.
In speaking about some of these season 28 tweaks further, ABC executive Karey Burke had the following to say (via Deadline) recently while at the TCA Summer Press Tour:
“The producers were just in last week talking about the casting and the creative evolution. It’s all very exciting. It won’t be major format changes, just tweaking and tinkering… the show’s been on so long and it’s been so successful elsewhere, I think they’ve done quite an impressive job of looking at what works.”
The point of Dancing with the Stars in our mind is simple: Engaging America with fun performances featuring notable cast members and good stories. You can offer up some new twists, but the last thing that we’d do is make some overcorrection based on the results of last season. What happened with Bobby Bones was a rarity, and we also can’t forget that there were a lot of people who liked the end result.
