The 100 ending; season 7 to be final season at The CW

The 100 season 6

The rumors have been out there for a while about the future of The 100but now it’s 100% official — season 7 of the long-running science fiction show will be the final one.

Why end the show now? Some of that may be due to this being a natural place to conclude it. Another part of this may be related to cost. For most broadcast series, they tend to get more expensive as they go along, especially once you get to the other side of that initial contract for the cast (which tends to last between six and seven seasons). It seems as though The 100 had plenty of awareness before today that season 7 could be the final one, so they may have been preparing for this for quite some time.

On a broader sense, this news does indicate further that we are at a point of dramatic change when it comes to the future of The CW. This network is losing three long-running hits in Arrow, Supernatural, and now The 100 over the next year, and that’s without knowing the ratings for any of their current shows. It does probably mean that a lot of other shows on their schedule are more likely to be renewed; because of the way that The CW lets their shows air all the way through, they actually didn’t cancel a single program on their schedule this past season. That meant series like In the Dark and Dynasty, despite low ratings, were able to continue on.

The 100 is going to be airing its season 6 finale on The CW a little bit later this week. Meanwhile, we imagine season 7 to premiere at some point in 2020. It could be as early as January, but we’re personally expecting it to launch more in the late spring, similar to what we saw with season 6.
