Love Island USA renewed; season 2 coming summer 2020

Here is some news that we didn’t expect coming out of the TCA Summer Press Tour this morning: A Love Island USA season 2 is happening!

Why is it a shock? The ratings for the first season are far from great, and there are a lot of standard CBS viewers who seemed to be annoyed by the aggressively-promoted show more than anything. Yet, this is the network recognizing that there is a chance to build something here over time. The British version of the series has become more and more popular and the expectation is that something similar could happen here, as well.

Also, season 1 of Love Island USA has delivered CBS one of its biggest streaming hits of a new series in the past year, and is also bringing the network a young female audience that it doesn’t get from most of its other shows. In other words, there is a lot of appeal for them here even if the ratings aren’t great.

The larger question we find ourselves wondering here is one that is simply about programming. Will the network continue to give you a new episode of the show every single weekday next summer? It’s a lot of a single show to dive into, especially when you’re also airing Big Brother three times a week. Yet, this is the format that works well in the UK and we don’t think the producers will change all that much next season. The style of Love Island works well but there’s one thing that needs to be considered — finding interesting cast members. There are a lot of people on this season that have become lost in the sea of similar personalities over time. Yet, there are a few stars who have emerged from the cast and we imagine that several of them will be well-known in the reality TV community after the fact.

What do you think of Love Island USA being renewed for a second season?

Beyond that, where do you want to see the series go from here? Be sure to share right now in the comments.
