Where is Smurf on Animal Kingdom? Ellen Barkin’s season 4 status

Where is Smurf on Animal Kingdom? If you find yourself watching tonight’s season 4 episode, there is a chance you may be wondering about this very thing. Ellen Barkin is notably missing from tonight’s episode, which is a big thing given that her character is one of the most important cogs in the story and Barkin is one of the most notable people within the show’s cast.

We know that her absence is aggrandized further by the fact that Smurf’s status on the show is in jeopardy in the first place. We know that she has cancer and she’s not getting the best treatment in the world for it. She acts almost like she doesn’t care about it at all. We’re seeing this character do whatever she wants to do and that includes her flying off to some unknown destination at the end of last week’s episode. This is why Smurf is missing tonight, and why is the only bit of footage we have from her in flashbacks?

So is Smurf going to be gone for good? The short answer to that is “no,” as there are some plans to feature Barkin back in the role down the road this season. That doesn’t mean that the actress is going to be a part of the series for good, but it does mean that she at least has some more stories to tell.

For now, consider Smurf’s absence on this episode to be a creative choice more so than anything else. Through Past Smurf, you do at least get some more evidence as to why she is the person she is now and why some of her behavior patterns are what they are. She’s lived such a dangerous life where she always acted like she was near death. How should now be any different? That may be something on her mind as she does what she can in order to cement her final legacy.
