Outlander notes: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, and more awards talk
Let us start off this article with a reminder that while you are going off to the office for the day, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe are doing the same thing! In a post on her Twitter, Balfe shared a message from the show’s latest director, one complementing the entire group for their “happy atmosphere” five seasons into a show’s run. That is a hard thing to do sometimes — the longer a show goes (especially when there is no clearly-defined end), it can be easy for people to start to get complacent, or think that the grass is a little bit greener somewhere else. Apparently, that’s not happening here!
While the comment shared by Balfe is a real testament to the entire cast and crew, we do actually give most of the credit to her and Sam. Why? The two names at the top of the call sheet often set the tone on set. They’re the ones other actors look towards for advice and because they are the primary drivers of promotion, their attitude and enthusiasm often bleeds over to everyone else. All this suggests to us is that five seasons in, Caitriona and Sam are coming into set with the perfect attitude and professionalism — they get the work done and treat those around them well. While we do often get to hear stories of fun on-set antics, we don’t want to ever forget that this is legitimate work, and a lot of people are pouring huge chunks of their lives into making sure that this is a worthy series.
Another awards show — this time in the UK!
While we know that Outlander has been unfortunately snubbed many times across the major awards circle out there, we are nonetheless happy to report that the show is nominated as a drama for the TV Choice Awards in the UK.
Outlander has luckily been a bit more successful in taking home awards voted on by many fans — take, for example, some of its People’s Choice Awards victories. Of course, it’s often a big winner in our end-of-year CarterMatt Awards, something that is always a treat to conduct on the site. We’ve oft-bemoaned that one of the biggest problems with Outlander and the major awards shows is that clearly, the voting block is either not understand the power of the story and its cast, or it is just not being sold to them in a way that they can easily understand. We think Starz is doing what they can at present to promote season 4, but after a series of Emmy snubs, we’re not sure what the confidence level should really be entering nominations this summer.
While Outlander season 5 continues filming…
