Saturday Night Live season 45: Who could host premiere?
So who are the safest bets here? Typically, it’s either a former cast member, someone who has hosted at least once before with a certain degree of success, or a performer from a big-time summer movie. The past two years, we’ve had former hosts take the reins in Adam Driver and Ryan Gosling; before that, it was a summer-movie star in Margot Robbie; before that, it was a former host in Miley Cyrus. The show wants to have a safe bet kick off the year, someone who will be easy to get behind and who can produce at least a decent episode. There are typically a few kinks to be worked out in the premiere episode, so we certainly are not expecting perfection.

Now, let’s just go ahead and share some of the choices.
Will Smith – How has he not hosted the show before? Aladdin may be coming out too early for him to be a serious contender, and that’s without even mentioning the criticism surrounding the Genie’s look in the film. Still, we know that he would be off the cuff and incredibly funny. We just don’t know how it hasn’t happened before now.
Tom Holland – It feels like a perfect fit given that he’ll have two Marvel movies in Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far from Home to spoof. He’s also young, enthusiastic, and would probably get SNL a lot of the demo viewers they crave early on in the season.
Maya Rudolph – This is our out-of-left-field former cast member choice. She’s spectacular and, beyond that, she seems born to play Kamala Harris. If she’s charting high at the time of the premiere, this is a call Lorne Michaels has to make.
Dwayne Johnson – He’s been spectacular almost every time that he’s hosted, and the SNL premiere will be less than two months, most likely, following the events of Hobbs & Shaw. Plus, maybe he could find a way to get back Bobby Moynihan for another wrestling promo sketch.
Sophie Turner – She’s got the Dark Phoenix movie this summer, and while this fall feels like it’s a little late for SNL to really play into Game of Thrones mania, we still think that there’s a chance they will go ahead and try.
Donald Glover – He’s a former host, for starters, and he also just so happens to be in The Lion King a little bit later this summer. He was fantastic the first go-around and it just feels like a natural call for Lorne Michaels to make.
Melissa McCarthy – Even if she isn’t there to promote any one thing, she’s a fantastic host and she really hasn’t been around the show too much since doing Sean Spicer. This would certainly be a great way to wake up SNL from its summer slumber.
