So what did the producers decide for the show tonight? Well, we’ve got a huge dose of Baldwin’s Donald Trump. Given that we haven’t seen much of him as of late, it made some sense for him to come back … we just didn’t expect him to come out and do a rendition of “Don’t Start Me Now” by Queen. We got a lot of memorable people from supporting people in the administration, including Melania Trump (Cecily Strong), Sarah Huckabee Sanders (Aidy Bryant), and Mike Pence (Beck Bennett). Oddly, we had a cameo from Chris Redd’s Kanye West.
So did any of this actually work? Well, it wasn’t actually all that funny right away, mostly because a lot of the jokes were a little on the nose even if a lot of the lines were accurate. The big scene-stealer for the sketch was Bennett as Pence, who had a number of great lines throughout. Eventually, Donald Jr. and Eric came out … and so did Robert de Niro as Robert Mueller, in what is probably going to be the last time we see him. Yet, Trump didn’t let him get too many words in edgewise.
In a way, we should consider this cold open to be a culmination of most of the past year in politics … but we probably were looking to see something that was more about the 2020 field than a bunch of people we’ve seen on this show a million times before. Baldwin is consistently funny as this character, but by forcing him to sing, you almost limited the ability for him to really get off a lot of his crazier lines.
Do we need more Trump spoofs in the fall?
At the moment, we’d argue that it is not necessary. Yet, at the same time by the time the fall rolls around, we will probably be in a position where we actually want to see Trump and some of his administration officials.
