Grey’s Anatomy alum Sarah Drew’s new pilot passed on by CBS

For everyone out there (like us) looking forward to seeing Sarah Drew back on TV, we’re stuck waiting … again.

Last year, CBS passed on a potential revival to the iconic Cagney & Lacey, one that was set to star the Grey’s Anatomy alum alongside Blindspot actress Michelle Hurd. It felt on the surface like a perfect fit for a crime-centric network like CBS, but for some reason or another, it just didn’t come to pass. (Given that CBS gets to see the pilots and we don’t, unfortunately the finer details are at times not passed on to us — there’s an alternate universe where we’d love to see all of these screeners ourselves.)

This year, unfortunately, the network has passed on another projects of hers in The Republic of Sarah, a show where she would have played the young mayor of a town in New Hampshire, one that shockingly finds itself becoming an independent nation. Why? Well, it turns out that there’s a valuable resource discovered within its city limits and declaring its independence is their best idea for preserving it to some degree. This show certainly had an ambitious premise, and obviously, this is a little more out of the typical comfort zone for this network than Cagney & Lacey was. To us, though, there is something really appealing about this show pushing the envelope and trying something different and we definitely do think that this would’ve qualified for that.

After these two misses, our real hope is that moving forward, we just get a chance to see Drew on something new, even if it is a heavily recurring role on a drama that’s already out there — or, maybe she just pops in on an arc for a comedy. Pilot season next year obviously can await her, but we hope that there are some more opportunities to see her in action after it’s been a solid year now since her last episode as April on Grey’s Anatomy. We would like to see her pop up again on the ABC show eventually, but there probably needs to be a good bit of distance first — that’s at least the thing that makes the highest degree of sense.

By the end of this coming week, we’re going to get a chance to see what the full CBS schedule is going to look like for the new season. Meanwhile, the season 15 finale of Grey’s Anatomy will air on ABC on Thursday night. That show has been renewed for both a season 16 and season 17, and you can read a little bit more about that right now just by heading over to the link here.

Are you bummed that this show of Drew’s did not get picked up for another season, and are you like us and eagerly hoping that there is another chance to see her at some point on something else? Be sure to share right now in the comments. (Photo: ABC.)
