Shadowhunters season 3 episode 19 review: Did Jace separate Clary, Jonathan?
Was this a smart plan? Well, it did have some merits, but by the end of the episode it also proved fruitless. The primary issue that Jace found himself dealing with is that no matter how hard he tried, there was no way he could prove to be fully on board with the idea of paying the Seelie Queen a visit and taking her in an effort to get back Jonathan’s family sword. He’s just of his right mind, and there’s only so far his mind will allow him to think.
Clary’s mind, however, is very much a different story. She is totally under the Jonathan poison at the moment, which is causing her to do and say some pretty terrible stuff that otherwise, she probably would not consider. That included just going along with this plan and then dismissing Jace once she realized that he wasn’t fully on board. The one thing that was interesting is that even while poisoned, it was clear that this version of Clary still had feelings for Jace. She still loved him, which made for quite a few awkward encounters when Jonathan realized that he had to put up with him. (Jonathan is basically the Shadowhunters version of Joffrey from Game of Thrones — we’re not sure that has ever been more clear than it is right now.)
Here’s your silver lining — amidst all of this, it seems as though Izzy and the rest of the Institute now have a solution ready that may be able to sever Clary from Jonathan’s bond once and for all. They can get her back and have her be happy, which probably is a foreign concept in a whole lot of ways this season given how much stress everyone’s under all the time. At least Izzy and Simon have a chance for something at the end of all of this, right? We’re at least building towards it…

The state of things for Malec
It’s not good — namely, Magnus is suffering and struggling to forget about all of the memories that he has of Alec. As a matter of fact, he tried to forcibly have them removed at one point. This is something that would allow him to focus more on his magic once more, after we saw Asmodeus show up at the end of the episode to give him some of the power back. Asmodeus claims that there’s nothing he cares about more than his son’s love, but he has a particularly weird way of showing it. As a matter of fact, we’d argue that few things within this world are more questionable than some of the emotional manipulation that is going on with him. He wants him to be successful, but removing him from his emotional rock is not an especially-effective way in which do it. We’d argue that instead, maybe some tender, love and care? Maybe showing your son precisely how you feel as opposed to throwing his heart into a ravine? That’s probably be the more effective option, but clearly, Asmodeus has his ways.
His latest stunt, apparently, is trying to get Magnus to channel his pain via his magic, which seems like it’s going to send him a dark road. While we do continue to have hope in our heard for the future of Magnus and Alec together, this does not change the fact that we’re fearful of the near future, and the path that we could be seeing these characters going down.
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, Shadowhunters season 3 episode 19 delivered a story that was one big gut-check after another for some of the show’s signature couples … but there’s still hope on the horizon. We at least know that there’s a means to separate Clary from Jace and while Malec may not be together as of yet, we don’t think there’s any reason to give up, especially since Jace knows that there is something up with his longtime friend.
