There’s a lot of shocking news to get into here, and it begins with Colin Donnell leaving Chicago Med after being a part of that show from the first season. Just in terms of how much he is featured on the poster! The writers lean so heavily on the Dr. Rhodes character that they even built a specialized room in the ED just so that he could be there around the other characters more often. Donnell’s exit (reportedly for creative reasons, per Deadline) is coming alongside the departure of Rachel DiPillo at the start of the season.
Donnell is not the only cast member exiting Chicago Med, as Norma Kuhling (Ava) is also going to be departing for similar reasons at the end of the season. While she’s still reasonably new to the franchise, that doesn’t make the news any less shocking. These two characters have been involved romantically, so you can make the argument that no matter where they go at the end of the season, maybe they find their way to go together.
Then, you’ve also got this news: Jon Seda is leaving Chicago PD at the end of this current season, also for creative reasons. Seda’s been a huge part of PD in addition to being involved with the One Chicago franchise through a number of Chicago Fire appearances. We can’t say that this one is super-shocking since Monica Raymund (who plays his on-screen sister Gabby Dawson) left at the end of last season of Fire. Antonio Dawson did have a number of storylines, including a big crossover one with Sylvie Brett that resulted in one of the universe’s most-popular ‘ships, but it hasn’t been featured in a while.
This news is coming on the heels of a number of Chicago Fire cast members renewing their pacts for additional seasons, including Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney. We’d obviously love to see these stars all stick around their respective shows for quite some time, but there are often a number of roadblocks and hurdles the come into play. Sometimes, a story just doesn’t speak to you anymore; other times, you just want to be somewhere else. We always understand One Chicago actors leaving these shows just because so many of them aren’t living in Chicago the rest of the year and the travel, plus being away from friends and family, can make it difficult.
All of these departing actors could return in the future, it really just comes down to the story — and they may need to depending on how their respective storylines ended.
