Chicago Fire season 8: Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney officially returning

Chicago Fire

Just in case you were worried about the future of a couple of Chicago Fire mainstays for season 8, now is the chance to exhale. We can now say that both Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney are each coming back for not only the upcoming season but also one more beyond that!

According to Deadline, both Kinney and Spencer have signed new two-year deals to come back to the landmark NBC series. While a season 9 for Chicago Fire is not altogether assured at the moment, we do think it’s pretty likely to happen based on the state of the current show’s ratings and also the fact that these two are already locked in.

So what about some of the other primary Chicago Fire cast members? For starters, David Eigenberg and Eamonn Walker are already locked in for another season — last year, they each signed new two-year packs to stick around. Meanwhile, Christian Stolte, Joe Minoso, and Yuri Sardarov have all signed new deals to come back for at least next season. Some of the female cast members (Kara Killmer, Miranda Rae Mayo and Annie Ilonzeh) joined a little bit later in the run, and because of that, they are still under contract.

The great news here is obvious — we’re going to keep seeing some of our firehouse favorites for a while moving forward! Beyond that, there’s another factor here to consider in that all of this suggests that we don’t have to be too worried in the fate of any cast member at the end of the season. While it’s possible in theory that someone could’ve signed a new deal knowing full well that they’re actually leaving — and this is a part of some elaborate scheme to throw people off — it would be a little bit of a surprise for the show to go this far down this particular road.

Ultimately, the fact that Kinney and Spencer was to remain on this show is indicative that they love the work, and they also seem to love the responsibility that comes with being the people at the top of the call sheet. There’s a lot of leadership that comes with that, and we give both of them kudos for being so willing to stick around and embrace filming in Chicago. Suffice it to say, it’s a little more challenging than working on a show in Los Angeles where sunshine abounds at just about every corner.
