The Rookie season 2 renewal hopes for Nathan Fillion, cast

Given that tonight marks the final episode of season 1, it feels like the timing couldn’t be more perfect to dive into The Rookie and its season 2 hopes. Have we done this before? Sure, but we’ve got a clearer picture of what the future could hope now and there is absolutely a lot worth talking about.

For starters, let’s kick things off with what is our current perspective on this subject: ABC wants to embrace The Rookie. They want this to be a big hit. They ordered it last year to series without forcing it to go through a lot of the trouble that their other series have to endure. They then gave it additional episodes beyond the initial thirteen. There’s even a potential tax credit in the works for it, provided that it does come back for another batch of episodes.

What we’re trying to say is that this show’s got a lot going for it — a premise that seems like it work to attract mainstream viewers, and then beyond that a fantastic leading man in Nathan Fillion and a way to make it cost-effective moving forward. Unfortunately, the one thing that it’s had going against it for the bulk of the season is that the ratings leave something to be desired. We think that ABC felt like this was going to be the show that really cured them of their Tuesday-night blues — it’s been ages since they’ve had a huge hit in this timeslot and the majority of the shows they try there are quickly canceled.

Are there things that hurt The Rookie in terms of live viewership? Absolutely. NCIS: New Orleans already has a big piece of the crime-TV piece, and beyond that New Amsterdam really overtook it for most of the season in the 18-49 demographic. It also never really had a top-tier lead-in to help it success. There aren’t a lot of comedies out there that tend to bleed over well into dramas, unless those comedies just so happen to be hit comedies that are drawing enormous ratings. Maybe if The Rookie aired directly after The Conners or Modern Family, it would have a little more of a chance for a bump.

When will ABC decide on The Rookie season 2?

Think in terms of at some point between now and the middle of next month — they have to formulate their upfront schedule and because of that, there are a lot of decisions that need to be made quickly. We think personally that they’re likely to give it another shot, though we wouldn’t be shocked if there are some creative tweaks over the summer, including the injection of a co-lead to add a little bit more star power.

The ball is in ABC’s court, and while we know that there are no guarantees in this business, we remain cautiously optimistic.
