NCIS season 16 episode 21 spoilers: Could McGee leave the team?

Once Upon a Tim

As we look ahead towards NCIS season 16 episode 21, it seems like now’s the time to start worrying about Sean Murray’s future. Or, that’s at least what the writers want you to be doing for one upcoming episode.

Want to get some more NCIS video coverage? If you haven’t seen our preview discussion for tonight’s episode “Perennial” just yet, you can do that at the bottom of this article right now! Beyond that, we suggest that you subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube so you don’t miss any of our videos … and that you take a look at our official NCIS playlist.

This is becoming somewhat of an NCIS tradition these days, where an episode airs in April that makes us wonder whether or not a given team member is leaving. We’re getting it with Barrett Foa and Renee Felice Smith on NCIS: Los Angeles right now; meanwhile, we had it with Lucas Black at times on NCIS: New Orleans last year, and that’s without even mentioning that Pride-related cliffhanger that may have at least had you doing a double-take about Scott Bakula’s future.

Now, McGee is in the spotlight, as the NCIS season 16 episode 21 synopsis suggests below:

“Judge, Jury…” – After entering cold case DNA into the system, Kasie solves a 30-year-old murder case, but a loophole in the legal system may set the suspect free. Also, McGee visits an elite technology company in Silicon Valley that is offering him a highly paid position, on NCIS, Tuesday, April 30 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

The first thing that we should note here is that McGee visiting an “elite technology company” does not equal Murray leaving the show. This is just the writers picking up and continuing a thread that was first established earlier this season, one in which the character’s future was thrown somewhat up in the air by a desire to have more money for his family. It’s natural for him to be in this place right now in life; he has a government job alongside Delilah in a city that is extremely expensive to live in. Sure, Silicon Valley’s not exactly cheaper, but it seems like making this move would come with a heft raise … though it won’t have that same rush that comes with being a part of NCIS as well as that feeling of family with his co-workers. He won’t be doing good in the same way, but after a good decade and a half of service, it would make sense for McGee to consider the private sector.

So why aren’t we too concerned that this shift is permanent? It’s mostly because Pauley Perrette had this huge celebration around her big farewell from NCIS and it’s a little bit weird that Murray, another longtime cast member, would leave a little more with a whimper. While he’s not an “original” cast member in the same way, he’s been around since the first season and only the most diehard of fans would even remember that he was not a series regular from the get-go with this show. McGee’s beyond important to this show and to the fans and if he ever does depart, he deserves a chance to walk towards the finish line with people cheering his name and giving him high-fives up and down the street.
