Call the Midwife season 8 episode 3 preview: A measles vaccination trial

Call the Midwife

Next week on Call the Midwife season 8 episode 3, you’re going to have a chance to see an achievement in modern medicine. Beyond that, you’re also going to have a chance to see yet another community party. We’ve already seen this episode from its recent UK airing, and without giving too much away, let’s just say that there’s a lot of fun to be had watching some of the characters in Poplar transform a public gathering into something that feels totally different. It’s very much in line with one of this show’s central themes: Community. These are characters who greet everyone with smiles, acceptance, and open arms. They don’t want anyone to feel left out and instead, they just want you to feel at home. It’s why we could easily call Call the Midwife the “warm fuzzy show” and the name would totally fit.

Below, CarterMatt is offering up the official Call the Midwife season 8 episode 3 synopsis with some more news as to what’s coming up:

Stop by the clinic, where the Turners oversee a measles vaccination trial while the team prepare for the Whitsun bank holiday. Valerie helps a struggling mother accept her son’s birth defect.

The thing about Call the Midwife though, is that it’s never just outdoor parties and positive achievements within modern medicine. There’s also something a little more devastating mixed in there and this time around, it is all about Valerie Dyer convincing a mother that what’s going on with her son is okay. The midwives on this show are more than just people who help with births; they help with lives, with empathy and understanding.  They made the community around them into something stronger and supportive, and this mother is absolutely going to be in need of all of the love that she can possibly get.

Preparation. That’s what we would say about this story for Valerie at the moment. The longer that this season goes along, the more increasingly difficult things will become. This is Jennifer Kirby’s strongest season as an actress, and it absolutely is the one where she has the strongest material. It’s a function of the writers now having this deep relationship with the character and knowing everything that she can bring to the table.

For those who want just one little slice of bonus scoop, know this: You’re going to have a chance within this episode to learn some big news when it comes to Violet’s future. season 8 is a great one for that character, who does find herself instilled with this greater sense of passion and purpose that she didn’t have ever before. She was always important to Poplar but now, she’s becoming an even larger pillar of that community.
