Shadowhunters season 3 finale will run for two and a half hours

Today, Freeform made a number of big announcements at their latest summit, and that includes us finally getting a chance to learn the Shadowhunters season 3 finale date. This is going to be an epic event, so much so that it is going to run for a span of two and a half hours! There are technically two episodes that comprise this event but even still, this is an unusually long — but certainly welcome — run time.

Let’s go ahead and get now to the finale date: Monday, May 6 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. That means that we’ve got a little more than a month to go before getting to these episodes. What we know about them for now are that the titles are “Alliance” and “All Good Things,” and that both were directed by co-showrunner Todd Slavkin. Slavkin and Darren Swimmer also wrote the final episode in tandem. It’s going to be powerful, emotional, and hopefully celebratory at times. The potential end of the show is sad but knowing these writers, they will find a way to include it in a way that makes the whole journey worth it.

What we’ve heard about the final episode, at least at the moment, is that it will do a good job of tying up many different loose ends within the Shadowhunters world. Yet, simultaneously we’re going to have an open door for more down the line, in the event there is a season 4 somewhere down the road. There’s always going to be room t0 tell great stories, but there needs to be an interested party. We have to look at the season finale right now as the series finale, but we know that great stories and legends never die.

Before we get around to the finale…

Remember that there are many more great stories coming up over the next month! The first order of business is obviously resolving the devastating Magnus-related cliffhanger that we got at the end of this past episode but beyond that, there’s also another order of business: The status of Jonathan. Lilith is also going to resurface at some point and we’re absolutely expecting there to be some romantic moments featuring a number of different characters. While this show may have a number of darker edges, there are also still moments that are warm, sweet, and comforting. This is a show about finding lights within darkness and finding a way to build a family while also working your way through the rubble.
