First caveat worth noting – Like with every other Shadowhunters ratings piece this season, it’s worth mentioning here that we are talking in terms of live+same-day ratings on Freeform. This doesn’t include viewers who stream online or on DVR the next day, and nor does it include anyone watching on Netflix internationally. Obviously, it’d be awesome to see Netflix be acknowledged, but they don’t like to release ratings. Consider it to be one of the more maddening practices that they tend to induce on a regular basis.

The actual numbers – “To the Night Children” drew, first and foremost, a 0.1 rating in the valuable 18-49 demographic — a.k.a. what matters the most to advertisers. This show’s been reasonably steady in this measure for the better part of this season, and we don’t see this changing either now or in the future. When you’re dealing with smaller live viewership (and demo ratings that tend to be rounded off to the nearest tenth), you don’t really see all that much in the way of fluctuation here.

As for what’s going on in terms of total viewers, however, there’s a little bit more change. This episode brought in just over 350,000 live viewers, its best total viewership since the midseason premiere. Does that mean more people are getting consistently invested on Shadowhunters as we get further into the season? That’s probably one component, as is the natural improvement that comes in the weeks that follow Daylight Savings Time. (For those who aren’t numbers-junkies, what tends to happen following Daylight Savings Time is that viewership for most shows drops a good amount; it’s a byproduct mostly of A) people getting used to the change and B) people starting to bask in some greater sunlight.)

What does this mean? – The small gains in the numbers are a positive sign that there could be continued interest in the property after the finale, but at this point, what probably matters more than individual numbers is the show’s staying power. If it’s clear to some other broadcasters or streaming services at the end of this season that the value of Shadowhunters is still strong, then it’s certainly possible that they could give it a look. There are never any guarantees, but there’s a reason to at least keep your enthusiasm.
