Today, stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins were the first to report on this news with a post on Instagram, where they explained the decision and just informed the crew. Season 15 will run for 20 episodes, similar to season 14, though obviously there’s a different sort of weight around these now. The timing makes sense, given that all three leads now have families that are getting older and at a certain point, the jet-setting life has to get a little bit tired. Also, how much more is there really to accomplish here? We’re talking about the longest-running primetime show in this genre ever, one that has made it past 300 episodes and one that also serves as the last remaining series from The WB. (It’s hard to even remember at this point, but Supernatural was at one point not an official CW show.) For those first few years, this show was considered on the bubble and there weren’t guarantees of renewal. Yet, over the years it’s kept a loyal audience, really to the point where it could have gone on as long as the cast wanted it to, per network head Mark Pedowitz.
To go along with the actors’ statement, here is what executive producers Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer had to say in a statement:
“Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We’d like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send off they deserve.”
Supernatural is the second major series on The CW to be ending during the upcoming 2019-20 broadcast season, as Arrow is going to be coming to a close with a 10-episode season that could premiere as early as this fall. There are still many other long-running shows on the network in between The Flash and The 100 — shows like Jane the Virgin, iZombie, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend are ending their run this season.
There’s obviously an added weight now over the final season, and we feel like everyone involved knows this. We’re expecting a powerful, emotional final chapter that will tie together every loose end in the best possible way — and, who knows? Maybe there will be a revival or something down the line.
