TV Madness 2019: Grey’s Anatomy, Mayans MC close out round 1

Mayans

TV Madness 2019 is officially upon us! March is one of our favorite times of the year for many reasons — spring is in the air, the days are getting longer, and the idea of a bracket is a part of our pop-culture lexicon. TV Madness is CarterMatt’s version of March Madness, where a number of fantastic shows from across the map face off against each other. There are seedings, head-to-head showdowns, and the performance of each show is based entirely on you, the reader.

Today marks the final day of the first round of TV Madness and here, the focus is on Grey’s Anatomy entering the competition against a show that had to fight its way to get here — Mayans MCThe play-in round concluded earlier today and the Kurt Sutter – Elgin James production overtook some fierce competition elsewhere. Now, it just has to figure out whether or not it will be able to move into the second round and go on a big run. It’s certainly got some enormous competition here if it wants to move forward.

If you’ve taken part in CarterMatt’s TV Madness before, you likely know how this works — we spotlight the two competitors and then, on the other side of it, give you a poll for you to commence your voting! The poll is located at the bottom of this article.

How voting works – Vote however often you would like! (Technical instructions for multiple voting can be found right above the poll.) We will keep this poll open until Monday, March 18 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time. The winner of this battle will take on either MacGyver or Blue Bloods, who officially kicked off their own showdown earlier today. No matter who makes it through the fray here, there’s going to be some difficult competition on the other side.

You can see the full bracket (including start dates for each individual round) in the graphic at the top of this article.

The competitors

Grey’s Anatomy (#2 seed) – It’s hard to really imagine a television world at this point where Grey’s Anatomy is not a part of it. Think about it this way — the show’s almost been around long enough now that people who were born in its first season almost have a driver’s license. There are people in medical school who probably started watching it as kids many years back. It’s a worldwide hit and Meredith Grey may very well be one of the most recognizable television characters out there.

…But none of this guarantees a victory in TV Madness. To the contrary. Sometimes in this tournament we’ve seen huge shows rest on their laurels and not make it very far. Take Game of Thrones, which isn’t even in the tournament anymore after a string of consistent defeats. Can Grey’s make a big name for itself this year in TV Madness lore? Time will tell.

Mayans MC (#7 seed) – Do you want to call the Sons of Anarchy spin-off an underdog? Possibly, but you’re going to have to define what an underdog is precisely first. This is a show that already won a super-tough showdown in the play-in. Here’s how close it was — it defeated A Million Little Things by FIVE VOTES. Seriously. This is one of the closest vote totals in the years that we’ve done this, but Mayans pulled it off and now it’s got a chance to replicate past play-in winner Black Sails, which made it all the way to the final four two years ago.

What Mayans has going for it at this point is a high-quality series that fans want to rally behind, an established brand, and also some of the best fans out there. These are people who love Sutter and James’ work, and are understandably disappointed by the lack of awards-recognition elsewhere.

I can’t see the poll; what do I do? – If you are on mobile, scroll to the bottom of the page and click to view the non-AMP version. If that does not work, give the poll a moment to load! On some mobile browsers, it may take a moment.

How can I vote more than once? – If you are having trouble casting multiple votes, try switching your browser, your device, or visiting the page under private browsing or incognito mode. There should be many handy guides online explaining how to do so if interested.
