Chicago PD season 6 episode 17 return date hopes; what could happen

Chicago PD season 6

Following tonight’s sure-to-be-intense Chicago PD episode, it makes sense to crave more pretty much immediately if not sooner. This season has really ratcheted things up ever since the fall finale — there are personal stakes (think in terms of what’s happening with Ruzek and Upton these days), but then there are huge professional stakes. We’ve seen some difficult cases play out and beyond that, also some moments that could change the landscape of Chicago as a whole. While this series may be about just a single unit in Intelligence, the writers have done an exemplary job crafting a narrative in which they can have far-reaching consequences. Every officer, detective, and high-ranking person matters and contributes to what is a certainly-messy landscape.

Unfortunately, you’re not going to be able to revisit this Chicago universe — at least in terms of live viewing — for a little while. There is no new episode coming to NBC next week and there’s probably not going to be another one for a while.

If you’re a committed Chihard, you probably know a thing or two about patience already — you’ve already sat through many a long summer and midseason hiatus, so this is no different. As a matter of fact, this hiatus is probably not going to be as bad as some of those. As we’ve reported already today, the earliest One Chicago can return is March 20 based on NBC’s current schedule, but may not be until March 27 or early April depending on how they want to structure the remaining schedule. You’re going to be waiting for a while, but it’s hard to think you’ll be waiting too much longer than a month.

Where could we go from here?

Well, for starters, we’re anticipating a lot of police politics. This has been woven into the fabric of Chicago PD from the beginning of this season and odds are, it’s not going anywhere. Like last season with Denny Woods, we suspect that this is going to be a season-long arc. The status of Ruzek and Upton’s personal lives could be right up there, given that things have certainly gotten increasingly complicated over time.

So separate from some of that stuff, the first thing we’d really like to see is a huge Trudy Platt story. Amy Morton needs a little more play on this show — she always does, but the past season and a half has been tricky for that. She’s one of the show’s best actors, and she needs that powerful script to sink her teeth into. We also would like something more for Burgess since it feels like she hasn’t had as many personal spotlights as a Ruzek or a Voight as of late. This show is about balance, and finding the right time for certain characters to come into focus and command the screen.

There is some darkness underneath the surface right now, with the Mayoral race threatening to swallow Intelligence alive. More than perhaps anything else, we want to see Intelligence do what it can to fight back — even at the expense of their own future. While there are a number of individual plots we’re craving, this is probably the one that will go down in the history books. It’s the one that has our heart racing and our brain screaming after every episode.
