As we outlined earlier today over at this link, Syfy licenses the show from IDW, and the issues at the heart of production appear to be on that end. A report from Deadline today further corroborates that, stating that there are some financial issues that are keeping production from commencing. Syfy reportedly is willing to offer assistance to make it happen, knowing the value of this property and the devoted fans who tweet, discuss, and overall celebrate the show and these characters. The report also notes that Wynonna Earp was quietly renewed already for a fifth season in addition to the publicly-known season 4 order. IDW is contractually obligated to deliver on those seasons.
So what is IDW saying on the subject of the series’ future? A source on behalf of the company told CarterMatt following:
IDW is committed to continuing to tell the Wynonna Earp story. Much like the fans, we are passionate about not only the series but the comics, the characters and the overall message that the Wynonna Earp franchise carries. We are in the process of working out the details for how the Wynonna story will continue and will share new details very soon.
This statement is in part hopeful and in part incredibly vague. There’s an understanding here of the passion that legions of Earpers (the name of the show’s wonderful fandom) have for the series, but also little intel as to how exactly they are planning to move forward with the property. It’s clear that they don’t want the series to go away, but there also is no specific timetable laid out.
Hopefully, this is a sign that good news will be announced soon regarding the show’s season 4 future; Deadline described the situation as dire, but with a property this valuable it’s hard to envision it just disappearing into a void. While the live ratings on Syfy are modest at best, this show is a streaming warrior, a DVR machine, and a bastion of hope and community to people all over the world. The network recognizes its value, as do the creative team lead by the incredible Emily Andras.
Regardless of this situation’s end result, this is one of the most-bizarre situations regarding an established TV series that we’ve ever covered. Typically a renewal is a gold star on the report card, a guarantee that more episodes are coming. It’s not often you see such turmoil that production is somehow delayed and you have to be nervous over the future of a beloved series — one that should be 100% safe and secure.
Obviously, this is still a breaking story — there have been so many updates today already! We’ll let you know when there’s more to report. (Photo: Syfy.)
