Oscars 2019 will televise all categories live, reverses decision

Oscars -

The hot mess known as the 2019 Oscars continues. What we’ve basically seen over the past nine or so months from the group is a series of calamities, starting with the controversial “Popular Film” category that went nowhere and then also announcing at that point that there were going to be some categories that were presenting during the commercial breaks and edited into the telecast later.

Well, nobody seemed too outraged about it then, but that changed when the Academy recently announced that CInematrography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling would be the four categories presenting during the breaks. That led to an almost-instant backlash and following that, today the Oscars deciding that they were going to revert things back to normal. Some of the top names in the industry had spoken out against the move and clearly, the Academy wanted it to be known that they’ve listened.

Here’s what the Board of Governors had to say in a statement today:

“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards — Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling … All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format.”

What we are perhaps wondering more than anything at the moment is simply this: why in the world did they think that all of this was going to work in the first place? Why did they make this sort of reckless decision that shortening the length of the show was going to get more people watching? We don’t think it’s really about that; it’s more about entertainment being more segmented and the lack of big-ticket movies getting the Best Picture nod — adding a special category just to get more eyeballs wouldn’t have worked. The Oscars also need a host that will pull in non-viewers to the telecast, which is probably why they wanted Kevin Hart … but they didn’t really bother to check his social-media history first.

This Oscars is a mess. They’re almost lucky that there isn’t a host this time given that the vast majority of the show would probably be best on some of the most ridiculous material in the entertainment industry over the past year: The Oscars.
