Today, the show’s official Twitter account confirmed that the Stana Katic series is going to be coming on March 26 in Spain and Portugal, via the countries’ AXN networks. This is a similar rollout in some ways to the first season, where the show had different premiere dates in different parts of the world. This show was devised from the start to have a global reach, and also different airing structures depending on the country.
We’re still excited to eventually get the show here in America on Amazon, but we imagine that it’s still going to be a while before we get to that point. The first season took several months before landing in the United States after its international premiere, and that makes some sense. For starters, Amazon releases all of their episodes at once, so it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for the streaming provider to release them until after the show’s come close to wrapping its run elsewhere in some countries.
Our hope, for now, is that Absentia season 2 is going to be premiering at some point this summer. That’s a reasonable expectation now that the show does have a streaming home.
What should we expect?
The producers of Absentia have kept some of the details secret on the story ahead, though the fair assumption to make here is that we’re going to be seeing Katic’s character of Emily Byrne continue to find her way in the world after enduring the trauma that she did in the past. She may be more actively a direct part of law enforcement again, but when you’ve got the history that she does, there are always going to be demons that come back to the surface. We are hoping to see some sort of teaser/trailer before too long — filming for the second season wrapped up late last year, and for those wondering, we remain hopeful for a season 3. There was at one point conversation about a possible renewal for season 2 and season 3 at the same time, even though that didn’t ultimately end up coming to pass.
