Outlander hiatus: Other suggested Caitriona Balfe TV roles!

Outlander

We know that the Outlander filming hiatus is ending soon, but while we wait for production to kick back up, why not talk about some dream TV roles for Caitriona Balfe?

Recently, we wrote a similar post for Sam Heughan (which you can read over at the link here), and the main thing we emphasize is this: Our list requires some suspension of belief. Obviously, there are filming and logistical issues that may keep any of this from happening, but we just wanted to undergo a thought-experiment where we figured out the perfect parts for the actress outside of Claire Fraser. We want to see her get as many chances as possible to show off her skills, and also to bring even more attention to the show itself.

The Handmaid’s Tale – Caitriona already stars in one critically-acclaimed drama — why not appear in another? We could see this show delivering a fantastic one or two-episode arc for her to really dive into and deliver something great. Also, the more opportunities for Emmy nominations for her, the better.

Mom – Let’s go from one extreme to the next. Mom would offer Caitriona a chance to do something totally different, something humorous and silly at times but also serious at others. This is a sitcom with heart that does tackle some important issues. It’d be great to see her have some fun, while also work alongside Allison Janney and Anna Faris.

Doctor Who – There’s just something immediately appealing about her working alongside Jodie Whittaker. Also, couldn’t she share a few time-travel tips? In all seriousness, we’d love to see Caitriona be a part of a futuristic story after spending so much time deep within the past.

The Good Doctor – This is a show that has so much heart that the medicine is elevated to another level — it’s basically what we would want from any medical drama. We’d see Balfe as a doctor from Ireland working for a brief stint in the St. Bonaventure Hospital, and her also having a past friendship with Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff). After all he’s been through, doesn’t Glassy need some more friends!

Lodge 49 – It’s one of television’s most-underrated shows and there’s something super-appealing to us about Balfe playing the part of a Bohemian transplant who arrives in Long Beach, stumbles upon Dud, and gives him yet another new impact on life. This show delivers a lot of short, spiritual journeys, and there’s something about it tonally that would make this gig feel like a breath of fresh air for Caitriona.
