Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5 review: An intersex storyline; Lucille’s love interest
Take, for example, an intersex child. This is information that came about due to a new test being administered in Poplar, one that was designed largely for the purpose of ensuring better healthcare for all women. In the process, it was discovered that one young woman in Lois was actually intersex — which is something that people in the 1960’s were not altogether aware of. Sister Monica Joan was at one point accused of incompetence, of not preparing a mother with this sort of information. Yet, how could she have known? There are certainly things that were impossible for anyone to know at that time.
In the end, though, Trixie was able to help Lois’ mother understand and, beyond that, help Lois herself understand that this doesn’t change her. She started to understand that more as the episode went along and by the end, we do think that she may have found some more reasons for hope.
Luckily, she does have a rather-great support system around her; we just hope that this continues.
Phantom pregnancy
This was another condition that many people in the sixties did not know much about, but it is certainly real and absolutely important. It does happen where partners become so connected to their spouses that they experience similar symptoms to pregnancy. They just have to find a way to handle the issues that may come up and recognize that it is okay.
In general, we would argue that this was a big message of this episode: Everything is okay. Nobody should be ashamed of struggle or shying away from who they really are. It’s okay to experience hardship, and what matters more than anything else is what happens on the other side of it.
Lucille’s possible new love
Tonight, Leonie Elliott’s character met a new man in Cyril who seems to be an absolutely caring soul — yet, she did push him away at first, feeling as though it was improper to grow close to someone who she met on the job. Yet, at the end of the episode she determined (with the help of some of her colleagues) that this was an improper way to be, mostly because of the fact that she should live in the moment. This could be the beginning of something more, but we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5 delivered some emotional stories — but could you really expect anything else? We hope that this episode was a beacon of hope to the intersex community — we certainly know that there was some hope for a few other characters, most notably Lucille, to have a happier future than she thought possible.
