Oscars 2013: ‘Family Guy’s’ Seth MacFarlane signs on as host
Are you ready for a shocker courtesy of the 2013 Academy Awards? Well, we now know for sure who is going to be the man responsible for emceeing the big ceremony on ABC next year, and it is probably someone that you did not see coming given that he has no hosting experience whatsoever at an awards show.
Nonetheless, “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, just over two weeks removed from his gig hosting “Saturday Night Live,” as now been booked to take on the biggest night for film of the entire year. In a statement, the man himself even joked about how stunned he was to land the gig:
“It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars … My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.”
The Oscars also posted a video that showed his announcement, and it was fairly humorous in that it involved trying to break the news to his father, who really seemed to be more concerned with giving him some new bathing suits than doing anything else. The other bit of humor here is a bit more unintentional, as this comes just a week after MacFarlane was the subject of a gaffe at the Emmys when he accidentally tried to speak from the wrong mic. (Let’s just hope that he goes to rehearsals this time around.)
Is it clear that the Oscars needed a change? Definitely, and the hope here is that MacFarlane will bring some energy to the show that will appeal to a younger demographic. His Comedy Central Roast experience may actually be more valuable than you would think, mostly because that environment is as tough as they come.
What do you think about Seth landing this gig?
