Grantchester season 4 episode 4 review: Will Davenport’s first case
What was one of the most prominent ones? It was a case that Geordie needed his help on, one that revolved around a family in peril and also one where a little boy was being blamed for a death. Yet, was the boy really responsible at all? That was something that the two had to get to the bottom of.
What we learned about Will tonight is that he’s green at this — he doesn’t know entirely what he’s doing in the job just yet, especially the parts that require him to go out into the field with Geordie. He ended up causing tension at times when he shouldn’t and did not fully understand precisely how Sidney did things.
Yet, it was Will’s capacity for kindness and understanding of humanity that led to him actually helping to solve the case. He was able to understand that the little boy actually confessed to the death of this woman out of fear; in reality, he was doing so in proxy of the real killer, an old woman who claimed she did it in order to protect the whole family. The perception of her may have been that she was frail, but she was actually so much more than that. She was able to defy expectations and use them for her advantage.
In the end, the case was solved and we learned just what sort of man Will truly is.
As for Leonard’s fate
After he was caught kissing another man on this past episode, he recognized that there was a chance that his whole career would be in jeopardy. That didn’t happen. It turns out that his secret is safe but at a cost. Mrs. Chapman decided to leave at the end of the episode rather than continue to be a part of his life with that secret in tow. She moves forward, and he at least gets to keep his career.
CarterMatt Verdict
Will Davenport fits into the world of Grantchester like a glove and he does feel like a good addition to the series — he is smart, likable, and above all else caring. He does have his fair share of flaws, but at the same time, he’s learning. That’s a big part of precisely what makes him appealing. We like that the characters within the world of this series are not just the sort who come in with everything figured out. This was a lovely showcase for Tom Brittney and it hopefully sets the stage for some more great stuff.
