Killing Eve season 2 will air on BBC America and AMC

When Kiling Eve season 2 premieres this coming April, it’s going to have a larger platform than ever before. After all, today it was confirmed that the BBC America series is going to have every single episode simulcast on sister network AMC. This is a somewhat unprecedented move for a cable series to call two different networks home, but it is also a move that makes a certain degree of sense. We’re talking here about a show that has enormous critical acclaim, and also one that deserves an even larger platform than it had in season 1. We should note that season 1 of Killing Eve managed to improve its ratings with each passing episode, which was rather unprecedented in its own right.

In discussing this decision to the Los Angeles Times, AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll had the following to say on the subject:

“It’s a great opportunity to expose more people to Killing Eve … These times demand trying some nonconventional methods. And if you have a platform as big and broad as AMC, then it seems like a god thing to try.”

Why wouldn’t AMC want to have this show? For starters, this will help to boost some of the network’s own ratings presumably, as The Walking Dead will wrap up season 8 right before Killing Eve premieres. Also, The Walking Dead does not have some of the ratings power that it once did many years ago. This is really all about just exposing Killing Eve to more viewers in the event that this could become a once-in-a-decade hit for the two different networks, similar to something like Breaking Bad or Mad Men. Those were shows that were able to build their audience over time on the strength of streaming and positive reviews. The tools are here for Killing Eve, and one of the few things holding it back was its network — BBC America is in fewer homes than AMC, and even some subscribers who have it probably aren’t aware of it. It’s the sort of network that many generalize and blow by, even if it has some incredible original programming including some favorites from across the pond.

Sandra Oh is just coming off of multiple awards-show wins for Killing Eve, so we’re also going to get a chance to see if that has some sort of larger impact on the series’ performance as well. It’s going to be tricky to monitor the show’s ratings on two different networks, but we imagine that somehow the parties involved will figure things out.
