Death in Paradise season 8 episode 3 review: Catrina’s murder + an engagement

Death in Paradise

Tonight, Death in Paradise season 8 episode 3 presented a story about a presenter — a dead one. Her name was Catrina, and she was the host of a popular travel series named Hot Spots. She died in the process of filming an episode set in Saint Marie, and there are a number of things that were suspicious here from the start.

For starters, let’s talk about the way in which Catrina died — she seemingly drowned after getting drunk and going for a swim in the middle of the night. She was there with a married man, which showed further that despite her success on the series and the opportunity to visit a number of super-fascinating places, she was still miserable. That’s probably why she was desperate to move on to another gig after so many years on this job.

So as Jack Mooney and the team started to investigate this case, of course they learned that there were suspects aplenty. Take, for example, the show’s producer in Bill, a guy who was doing what he could in order to force Catrina to stay on the show. Meanwhile, you also had the production coordinator in Pippa, a woman who was desperate to get back to hosting after doing the Hot Spots pilot, and of course then the married man she was having an affair with.

Here’s where the show managed to execute one of the best twists of the season — the killer actually didn’t want Catrina dead at all! Instead, they were targeting Bill from the start and when they realized that they’d failed in their quest, they killed Bill and then staged that as a suicide. It was Terry, the crew member who cared about Catrina more than anyone. She was like a daughter to him and he wanted to kill Bill to ensure her happiness — he thought Bill was forcing her to stick with a show and a career that in the end, she didn’t want. He was trying to help her but, because of her showing up at Bill’s room at the wrong time, she ended up being poisoned instead.

Happier news…

Patrice and Florence are engaged! Their romance has certainly escalated the past few episodes, but now it seems like we may be getting a Death in Paradise wedding by the end of the season. After all these characters go through on a weekly basis, don’t they deserve a little happiness?

CarterMatt Verdict

This is probably the best mystery of the season, at least in terms of the twists and turns. Maybe you can argue that Terry didn’t have a strong-enough motive, but at the same time, we can’t quite measure how much he cared for Catrina on the outside looking in. Nonetheless, him being the killer made the guessing game rather fantastic.
