Call the Midwife season 8 video: All about the time period!

Are you ready for Call the Midwife season 8 to officially arrive on BBC One? The series will be coming on the air this Sunday, and there’s going to be a wide array of events that you can expect to see unfold. There are going to be many expecting mothers in need of help, and obviously those stories will be paramount to everything that the series does.

With that being said, these stories are heavily-informed by a series of other things, with one of the most-notable ones being the show’s sense of time and place. That’s always been something that has been important, especially with the 1960’s being as a whole a time of tremendous growth and change. This is a very different world now for many of these characters and through the run of this season, we’ll see people start to explore some of that. This is explained even further by the cast and crew in the new video below, where they discuss everything from the visual differences to the East End (more high-rise buildings) to also the societal changes that are starting to sweep in.

One of the major ones that is going to be explored through season 8 is contraceptives. These are starting to become a little more widespread, but shouldn’t they be available for everyone and not just married women? We’re going to see the show’s midwives do their best to educate and inform, while also tackling some unexpected challenges along the way. This show is about helping many mothers understand their lives and their choices, and you can see Helen George explain specifically in this video how she wants young people to have conversations because of this show that they may not have otherwise. While this is technically entertainment, at the end of the day there is a chance for it to evolve and be about so much more. It’s a series that can bring people together and maybe have them thinking about things that they would be otherwise.

Given that there are eight total episodes coming up this season, we absolutely think that there are going to be a number of different opportunities for the show to facilitate some of these conversations.
