Who is Barry Friedman? At the end of tonight’s new episode of Gotham, Friedman was honored with a title card, which is a really wonderful way to honor him.
Friedman’s work on the Fox series was invaluable to its success for quite some time, as he worked as a post-production coordinator for more than thirty credited episodes. This is a job that is essential to making sure what is filmed behind the scenes ends up making it on air, and it’s something that deserves so much more recognition than it receives. You do hear a little bit more about the camera and sound operators alongside everyone else on set, but without post-production there’s no way that any of that footage ends up making any sense. There is a great deal to coordinate, manage, and set up on a daily basis from the music to the dialogue to the editing and proper mixing. It’s a really important job, even though it doesn’t always get all the glory that it should.
In addition to working on Gotham, Friedman was also essential on some other notable shows including The Player and Man Seeking Woman, which is one of the most underrated comedies out there in recent years. He also had roles behind the scenes on such shows as Wilfred and The League. When you look at many of these credits, it was clear that he was well-loved within the greater Fox / FX community, as many of these shows (with the exception of The Player, which aired for a season on NBC) aired across this particular group of networks. According to his IMDb profile Friedman was still quite young and had so much more to give across television and film.
We appreciate Gotham greatly taking a moment at the end of the episode to honor Friedman, given that crews often become families thanks to the long hours that they put in. These are incredibly meaningful tributes to honor people who pour their heart and soul into their work. They don’t often get the recognition they deserve elsewhere, and the important thing with tributes like these is that they allow viewers to look more into the work of someone who ha passed away and recognize everything that they did behind the scenes.
