Hawaii Five-0 season 10 renewal odds: A Ratings Report + a look ahead

Hawaii Five-0

Should we expect a Hawaii Five-0 season 10 coming up at some point in the future? In today’s CarterMatt Ratings Watch, we have quite a bit of discussion on that subject!

We should start off this article by saying this: At the moment, there is no immediate cause for concern when it comes to the series’ future. There’s been no overt buzz about major departures (as of this writing), and there have been no public concerns over the series’ ratings. To date, this season is averaging a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic (down about 15% in live numbers versus season 8) to go along with about 7.5 million viewers weekly (down less than 10%).

On paper, it’s easy to look at ratings declines and assume the worst, but there’s really not all that much to be concerned about at the moment with this show. We’re basically in an era now where it is increasingly difficult to convince viewers to watch shows live and drops of about 15% from one season to the next are fairly normal. Add to this the fact that Hawaii Five-0 airs on one of the most challenging nights of the week for viewers in Friday night. It’s still one of the most-watched shows on the night behind only Blue Bloods, which airs right after it on CBS.

There’s one other factor here with this show that could all but guarantee the show’s renewal and a lot of that comes down to this simple question: What would CBS even replace the show with in the event that they were to end it? There aren’t any candidates really out there. We don’t think that a network should contemplate making any sort of big move here unless they have a good idea of how to improve their lineup and there are no clear options out there.

We were actually more worried about the show’s future last season than this time, given that there was so much speculation about Alex O’Loughlin’s future going into season 8. It seems as though he’s now found a rhythm of doing the show in a way that works for him, and it is also not causing him the same physical pain that it used to earlier in its run with all of the stunts and the physical toils of playing the McGarrett character.

Odds are, you will hear something a little bit more official when it comes to Hawaii Five-0 and the future of the series come later this spring.
