O’Loughlin is currently in the process of directing the first episode in production in 2019, which is currently the 17th one in the show’s season 9 order. That does not necessarily guarantee that it will be the 17th one to air, but filming will likely be happening throughout the days to come. It makes some sense for him to be directing the first episode back after a break — because actors have such busy schedules, it is sometimes hard to direct right in the middle of the season because you need a good bit more prep time if you’re taking on the role. In scheduling it this way, O’Loughlin could use some of the holiday break in order to better prepare. (We’ve seen something similar with Supernatural and Jensen Ackles, who has helmed episodes right at the start of production in the past.)

This is Alex’s second time in the director’s chair after taking on a similar role last year, and he said throughout the promotion of that episode that he wished he had a little bit less of an acting role in it. Sometimes, it can be difficult to balance the two, especially if you have a lot of prep time as an actor. We wouldn’t be surprised if this particular installment had less of a role for Steve, but it’s really hard to speculate on that so far in advance. (Of course, this show has such a large cast that there are plenty of people out there who can take on a lead role even if Alex has a slightly smaller presence.)

So when will this episode air?

Given that there are several episodes that have already been filmed that are still to air, we’d be shocked if it comes on before March. Its air date could be heavily dictated on scheduling, but this is something that we will keep our eyes peeled on in the weeks to come. It’s always a special occasion when a cast member takes on an extra role (think in terms of Chi McBride writing earlier this season), so we’re sure that there will be some extra promotion and a spotlight on this story leading up to it.
