Golden Globes 2019 notes: Jeff Bridges, Chrissy Metz, & Jameela Jamil

Before we wrap up our coverage of the Golden Globes tonight, why not present some assorted headlines from the night? The show itself was fairly light and fun, but there were a few things both inside the show and out that stand out.

Jeff Bridges’ speech – We have no idea as to what this really was, but at the same time, that’s kind of the person who Jeff Bridges is. He’s the sort of dude (pun intended) who would go up and give some random, off-kilter speech with all sorts of stuff in there that no one would understand. That’s also a big part of fun of supporting him as an actor and his choices over the years — he tends to do things that very few people would.

Chrissy Metz – One of the weirder controversies of the night came early in the day, when the This Is Us star was supposedly heard calling Alison Brie a “b—-” in a red carpet live stream. She wasn’t on-camera, but it sounded as though her microphone hand’t been cut off yet and she did not realize it.

For the record, Chrissy denies saying this in a post on Twitter, saying that she has nothing bad to say about Brie as a whole.

Jameela Jamil – Finally, we turn to what could’ve been one of the most ridiculous stories of the night were it to have a different ending. The star of The Good Place, during the E! pre-show broadcast, was referred to by Kamilah al-Jamil, which is not her character’s name, but her sister’s on the show. What makes this so funny is that on The Good Place, Tahani hates her sister and would probably be revolted about the fact that she was mistaken for her.

Eventually, E! came on at the end of the show and admitted that this was a mistake … though of course, it would’ve been so much funnier if this was the plan of some intern who had a bright idea to try and stir things up a little bit.

Overall…

This was a solid awards show with some interesting wins — there were some surprising wins, but we at least think that tonally, the show had the right idea and it did a good job of at least moving along at a nice pace … even if it did predictably go over.
