Luther season 6 renewal hopes: Will more episodes come Idris Elba’s way?
The first thing that is worth noting here is that, technically, there is no official word that a season 6 is going to happen. With that, it feels wrong to guarantee 100% that there will be a little more of Idris Elba on BBC One as this character in the future. This is the sort of series that can ebb and flow depending on whatever is going on in the story.
Now that we’ve said all of that, for now it does feel like there is a cause for optimism. There have been times in the past where Elba was a little more pessimistic about the future of this series; yet, it feels more now like he embraces the future a little more and is hopeful for it. The big difference now may just be that there is a looseness that comes with the show and the format of it. He and Neil Cross can come back to the project whenever they want, and they don’t have to worry about any pressure to do so. They just need some breaks in between because we’re talking about one of the heavier, more-challenging roles out there. It takes a lot to play John Luther — and to write about him — and you do need to have some time to do some other things.
There are two different options that out there for the future of the series moving forward.
1. Another season – This is the more traditional route to go here and there’s a good chance that this will happen. After all, it doesn’t have to be any particular length — we could see Luther becoming a TV movie just as we could envision it being a four-part series. Either way, we don’t think that we’d see more of it until 2021 just because Elba’s got some other stuff going on.
2. A movie – This was talked about in the promotion for season 5, but there were no assurances that we’d actually get another season at the same time. This was more wishful thinking than it was anything else; we do understand the temptation to try to go bigger and bolder with John Luther as a character and a movie would give the team a much bigger budget.
What do we prefer?
A Luther season 6 on television, mostly because we don’t love mixing mediums. We didn’t love it for Sex and the City, we don’t love it right now for Downton Abbey, and we certainly would not love it for Luther here. It’s better sometimes to just let something be in the same medium that started off the buzz.
Yet, beggars can’t be choosers with this sort of thing and we’d rather have more Luther in some shape or form than no Luther at all.
