Ratings: The Masked Singer wins big; SEAL Team, Criminal Minds fall
Last night’s series premiere ended up drawing an incredible 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic, more than double any other show on the night. It marks the biggest series premiere for any network since the start of Young Sheldon back in the fall of 2017, and it is the biggest launch for a show on Fox since the beginning of Empire. It is the highest-rated unscripted debut for a show on Fox in nearly seven years.
When you consider that The Masked Singer has such a unique premise, and some of the viewership was based mostly on curiosity, we do think that there’s a good chance that the ratings will drop over the coming weeks. Yet, it’s going to have to lose a huge chunk of its audience in order to be in any danger and a season 2 renewal seems almost like a lock. The only advice that we would offer moving forward is not to make the clues too obvious as to who some of the people are. It feels like there are some people out there who have already been found out.
Still the first celebrity reveal was pretty awesome last night, especially when you think about how they were a pretty-recognizable famous person and not just some D-lister. That has to play a big part in the show’s success, since viewers want to know that they are watching actual celebrities perform. It can’t be a half-measure since then, nobody is going to want to keep watching.
As for some other ratings news on the night…
The fate of SEAL Team and Criminal Minds
After drawing some of their best ratings of the season prior to the start of the holidays, these two shows slipped down to a 0.9 and then a 0.7 rating, respectively, for last night. These ratings aren’t terrible when you consider their season averages, but at the same time you do still have to wonder whether or not they are going to be good enough in order to get this particular show renewed for another batch of episodes down the line.
If you missed it, last night we did post a video talking about Criminal Minds and the quest to get the show renewed for a season 15. Check that out at the bottom of this article, and remember that you can subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more.
