The Beverly Hills, 90210 ‘revival’ may not actually be a revival at all
According to a new report coming in via TVLine, the premise for this revival is actually rather meta — instead of playing their original characters from the series, Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris would be played heightened versions of themselves in an effort to try and get a revival project for the series off the ground. This is fundamentally a chance for the series to play around with form a little bit and to do something that catches a number of people by surprise. We do think that there is a good bit of fun that could go along with this, provided that the writing is on point and it’s different from what else is out there.
Yet, we also don’t think the idea of watching former cast members playing heightened versions of themselves trying to stage a revival is really all that original a concept, given that this is something that Curb Your Enthusiasm, among other shows, has done already in the past. Also, wouldn’t just doing a straightforward version of the old show be a little bit more interesting than watching these actors effectively just play different variations of the people they are in real life.
There is no guarantee that this will actually happen and if it does, we really hope that it’s fascinating enough to be worth all of the effort. The obvious concern that we’ve got entering this idea is that if these actors are playing themselves, do they really want to give themselves a story that is so scandalous that people start to ascribe some of that to their actual life? It does feel like something that they should actually have a reasonable amount of fear over.
This revival is currently set up over at CBS Television Studios and over the next few weeks, we imagine that some more information will start to come out over whether or not this series is getting off the ground. The first order of business here, of course, is finding a network that is interested; at least one broadcast network appears to be involved.
