BBC teases Poldark, Peaky Blinders, Call the Midwife, more in 2019 promo
In this new video, the BBC teases a fantastic number of shows that are coming in the near year and it’s an exceptional mix — we’ve got Poldark season 5 in here, more Peaky Blinders, the return of Call the Midwife, more Line of Duty, and even some shows that are airing right now including Luther and Les Miserables. This is absolutely going to be one of the best years for the network in some time, even if there are some key omissions.
What are some of the ones that stand out at the moment? Think in terms of Bodyguard first and foremost — this was the biggest British drama of 2018 but it doesn’t appear as though there will be more episodes this year. There has yet to be a formal renewal for a series, let alone an indication as to precisely when more could be coming back on the air. Our feeling is that we will get more eventually, but probably not until 2020 since scripts need to be written and maybe after that, filming can actually begin.
Meanwhile, it has always been confirmed that Doctor Who will not be returning until 2020, as filming for the latest batch of new episodes will begin a little bit later this year. BBC One enjoyed a great deal of success with the latest batch of episodes, even if the New Year’s Eve special ended up generating some of the lowest ratings for a holiday special at the network in some time. There is still quite a bit to celebrate for the BBC in terms of ratings for the rest of the season.
The other bad news
Season 5 is the final season of Poldark, and for a lot of other series it’s hard to really know leading up to them precisely what the future holds. For a show like Luther, for example, it really always comes down to whether or not the writers have a great deal for what to do next. It’s a little bit similar to Sherlock in that way. At least with Call the Midwife there is some sort of cognizance that there will be, at the very least, one more season of the series following the conclusion of season 8. (That batch of episodes is slated to premiere a little bit later in the month.)
