The Orville season 2 episode 2 video: Charting a new course

The Orville

Going into The Orville season 2 episode 2, you’re probably going to see a little bit more of what you expected this season — which is a little bit ironic given that this episode was originally filmed during season 1.

Nonetheless, we’ve read a lot of the discussion out there about the premiere and understand where a lot of it comes from. There are some who felt like that episode was a little bit too heavy on the relationships, and they would’ve preferred more of the crew outside of the ship. We do understand that, but we are also trying to approach this season from a mindset of trying to acquire new viewers. As we explain in the video below (if you like this, subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more updates), one of the best ways in order to do this is trying to figure out the right way to establish a comfort level. The premiere did that. Without being too much of a retread, it did give everyone watching for the first time at home a chance to really get to know a lot of the crew members and we think that there is a certain degree of value to that.

Now that the crew of The Orville has been somewhat reestablished, the series can go back to having some more adventures separate from the ship — missions that have that specific Star Trek vibe to them. There’s going to be a little bit more action, and of course a chance to explore some new frontiers and meet a wide array of different people.

Ultimately, though, one of the things that does make this show work from this vantage point is that it is basically a giant sandbox and the writers can really choose to do whatever they want. If some of the episodes are meant to be a little bit sweet and heartfelt, there’s nothing that gets in the way of the writers doing that. Meanwhile, if they want them to be funny or at times crazy, that’s also an option. As long as there is a real sense of adventure and romance at the heart of everything The Orville does, it’s going to be altogether impossible to be mad at it so long as the quality is there. (Of course, we perceive quality a little bit different than some of the standard folks out there who like to hate on the show at every turn.)
