Why NCIS benefits from early renewals more than most other shows

At the moment, there is no official NCIS season 17 renewal out there — yet, at the same time it’s easy to feel confident that one will be coming.

Why would there be any buzz otherwise? When you look at the ratings, there’s no real reason to consider a possibility that the series will end. The show is averaging a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and more than 12 million viewers — these are big drops from when the show was in its heyday, but there aren’t exactly many shows out there still getting more than 12 million viewers a week. It’s one of the last remaining mega-hits from an era where live viewing was the primary way in which people watched television.

Ultimately, renewing the show early is the #1 way to stop all of the bogus rumors otherwise, and this is one of the reasons why CBS should go ahead and consider giving us more of the show sooner rather than later. We cannot tell you how many times we hear rumors that either A) NCIS is ending or B) some various actor on it is. That’s why we even made the aforementioned video! The main reason a lot of this stuff comes out is simply because some media outlets out there know that they can exploit the rumors for traffic. Given that this series has lost Pauley Perrette, Michael Weatherly, and Cote de Pablo over the past several years, it’s fathomable that some other major player could leave. That’s why it is easy to buy into even-manufactured headlines. It’s also easy for some to exploit talk of the series ending just because it’s been on the air for so long.

By renewing NCIS early, what CBS is doing is giving viewers more confidence that they can keep watching — not only that, but they are nipping the problem of false rumors before they become an even larger problem. Sure, there will probably be some out there that still happen — like the Harmon one — but you may be able to at least quiet some conversation around the future of the series as a whole.

Remember that NCIS returns to television in the new year; we haven’t even reached the halfway point of season 16 yet!
