Saturday Night Live: Dan Crenshaw called Pete Davidson after Instagram post
Earlier this year on Saturday Night Live, Davidson came under fire for mocking Crenshaw’s appearance (he lost his eye in combat) and military service in a Weekend Update piece where he was roasting a number of political candidates. The following week, Pete apologized to him in a segment and then allowed Crenshaw to openly mock him. The two came together and offered up a positive message — something you don’t see all that often for people who are diametrically opposed.
Now, today Congressman Crenshaw made it clear in a new interview on a network affiliate (see below) that he and Davidson had another conversation, this time after Davidson caused a great deal of concern over an Instagram post in which he suggested that he didn’t want to live anymore. This was a situation that was deemed so serious that the NYPD performed a welfare check and many of his friends went into overdrive in order to help him. He did make one live appearance during this weekend’s episode, as he introduced musical guests Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus.
Here is some of what Crenshaw had to say during the interview:
“I talked to him personally [at the end of the weekend]. We don’t go back very far. We’re not good friends, but I think he appreciated hearing from me. I told him everyone had a purpose in this world. God put you here for a reason. It’s your job to find that purpose and you should live that way … Know you have value, Especially a guy like that: Sometimes he makes people laugh. Sometimes he makes people mad (laughs), but he makes people laugh a lot. It was a good conversation.”
What many people do fail to understand sometimes is that comedians often use laughter as a way to handle some of their own pain better and Davidson has clearly felt a fair share of that through his life, whether it be losing his father on September 11 to dealing with mental-health issues or the backlash he has incurred this year following his relationship with Ariana Grande. Then, there were also some who chose to be exceptionally cruel to him even after he threatened to take his own life.
It was kind of Crenshaw to do this. Regardless of beliefs, everyone does need to recognize value.
