Saturday Night Live spoofs Game of Thrones with Khal Drogo’s Ghost Dojo

Tonight on Saturday Night Live, the NBC series delivered by far its biggest spoof of Game of Thrones via Khal Drogo’s Ghost Dojo.

What was this one all about it? Basically, Jason Momoa reprised his famous role as Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones for a fake talk show in which he interviewed a number of other dead characters. Kenan Thompson was an awkward host and over the course of this, we saw an appearance from the High Sparrow, Hodor, and also Brienne … who ironically was not actually dead at all. Still, we laughed a lot during this. That’s especially the case when we got an appearance from Kate McKinnon as Joffrey and, soon after that, Aidy Bryant turned into Olenna for what was a sketch making fun of Jerry Springer. (There was a little line in here about Joffrey being Justin Bieber that the audience did not catch, just like they didn’t catch the Kevin Hart reference that was sprinkled in here amidst the Oscars controversy.)

Also, what was with the random Talking Dead spoof at the end? Doesn’t SNL know that this is a Walking Dead thing more so than anything else?

While we’re not sure that this was fun as it could have been if the timing was a little bit better overall, we’re still going to appreciate the fact that SNL did that. It’s just hard to spoof Khal Drogo when he’s such an intense character in the first place. The one thing that we were pretty surprised about was that there wasn’t an actual cameo in here from a Game of Thrones cast member beyond Momoa, especially when there are some who tend to gravitate around New York City and Peter Dinklage has hosted the show before. (If you look back at the annals of SNL history, you will realize that some of the spoofs of Game of Thrones have been somewhat mixed — though we did appreciate the one that had a random Nikolaj Coster-Waldau cameo and also Bobby Moynihan pretending to be a dragon.)

Still, this sketch did at least remind us that we miss seeing Momoa on Game of Thrones, where he did bring a heck of a lot of entertainment to that show for so many years. Drogo had a unique relationship with Daenerys and ended up defying a lot of our own expectations for him.
