Fear the Walking Dead season 5: Is Daniel Sharman returning?
According to ComicBook.com, Daniel Sharman is positioned to return to the AMC series coming up in the role of Troy Otto, the troubled young man and member of Broke Jaw Ranch we met alongside his father and his brother in season 3. Troy was a firecracker, a cause of conflict, and also someone who was constantly on the verge of causing mass chaos. He bounced back and forth between being a possible Big Bad and then the product of an extremely-difficult environment; alas, the character died before we really had a chance to explore him further.
Given that Troy is dead, how in the world do you bring him back? Flashbacks could be an option here, or maybe the series has some other interesting plans in store. Either way, seeing the former Teen Wolf actor back is going to be a surprise given that Troy wasn’t even really referenced during the fourth season of the series. We got the sense that new showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian B. Goldberg were willing to move forward with what was ultimately a very different story and different cast — heck, there aren’t even that many core cast members for Troy to interact with that he will be familiar with. Alicia Clark is obviously a notable one, but her brother Nick and mother Madison were both killed off within the first half of the fourth season.
In the end, we do have to think that there’s a plan here, and we’re certainly not mad about the idea of Sharman coming back into this world. We do think that Troy was one of the more noteworthy additions to Fear the Walking Dead during the time that he was around; in that span, Sharman established himself as one of the most under-appreciated actors on cable. He brought a lot of chaos and also humanity to Troy, which is interesting given mostly that this character had his moments of being extremely inhuman and also acting that way.
Fear the Walking Dead season 5 will premiere at some point on AMC next year. While there is a new batch of episodes coming, we anticipate that these will not be the same sort of complete reinvention this time around. Goldberg and Chambliss are remaining as showrunners and it seems as though some of the current crop of survivors have found a suitable new home for themselves in the factory. Whether or not this actually turns out to be the perfect place for them down the line is something that still remains to be seen.
