True Detective season 4: Should HBO already be thinking about it?

Technically, True Detective season 3 is not going to be on the air for at least another month. With that in mind, we recognize that it is still extremely early for us to get into some sort of discussion about the series’ long-term future.

Yet, here we are doing that very thing for one simple reason: We like to think ahead. Also, we have to imagine that on some level, HBO may be thinking about it themselves. Because of the way in which their business is run, they do often need to be thinking a good couple of years ahead. They need to figure out what shows they want to put on the air and precisely also where they want to air them. There’s a reasonable amount of strategy that goes into a number of the moves that they end up making.

With True Detective, though, they’ll have to think especially far ahead, given that we don’t foresee that a season 4 for this series will happen until late 2020 or even later. Following the success of season 1, one of the big arguments out there with this show was that HBO may have moved a little bit early in their efforts to get the series back for another season. We do understand why on some level, given that they wanted to do everything that they could in order to ensure that there were more new episodes out there and they wanted to capitalize on its previous success. Yet, it was clear after the fact that a year and a half was not enough time in order to tell a new, super-creative story with new characters and an entirely new cast. There needed to be a little bit more of a wait to develop things. That’s what happened this time around, and we much prefer the same process happen for season 4, even if season 3 is a huge success.

Because of all of this, our argument at the moment is rather simple: The earliest that we want to see True Detective come back is probably 2021, just because we’ll feel some reassurance at that point that nobody hurried things along and that the show was not rushed in the slightest. Also, HBO may not even have a whole lot of room until then given that there is so much more on the horizon for them with more Westworld, Game of Thrones, the Game of Thrones prequel show, Watchmen, and a myriad of other things that are all currently in development over there.
