SEAL Team season 2 set to have long midseason hiatus

SEAL Team season 2

For everyone out there who loves SEAL Teamthere is some bad news to report: The show will be off the air for a good stretch of time in the new year. When it does come back, it may be doing so in a later timeslot than before.

Today, CBS released officially their midseason schedule, and it’s pretty clear that the David Boreanaz series is missing in action. Why is that? CBS is looking at airing a lot of unscripted programming during the months of January and February, whether it be new episodes of Celebrity Big Brother or new talent competition The World’s Best. When SEAL Team eventually does return, it will be on March 13 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time – but there’s a possibility that there will be episodes airing in January (they aren’t making their scheduling all that clear at the moment). As for the reason behind the move, it does have a good bit to do with the series’ ratings, which have slipped somewhat in its second season. It may have a better chance of coming back in a later timeslot, where there are fewer viewer expectations in turn. (It is averaging right now a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, down just more than 15% from season 1.)

If there is a silver lining when it comes to the long SEAL Team hiatus in the winter, it’s that there will be a lot of new episodes airing consecutively in the spring. For those who are frustrated by networks’ patterns of airing a couple of new episodes, a repeat, more new episodes, and then another repeat. That can be a frustrating trajectory for many, and in many ways, it’s a good thing that people won’t have to deal with anywhere near as much scheduling craziness.

As for what the current SEAL Team renewal odds are, we’d say for the time being that it is very much on the bubble. There is a reasonably good chance that it could come back for a season 3, but it will likely all depend on the numbers this spring and CBS may choose to wait until May in order to make some sort of formal decision. While there are times in which CBS likes to do a bulk renewal of many of their shows in March or April, it’s hard to really anticipate such a thing happening with this show given the long hiatus. (Still, hasn’t CBS surprised us before?)
